Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Muhammad said on Friday that he made a phone call to billionaire Elon Musk to discuss Tesla’s investments in electric cars in his country, as well as SpaceX satellite communications services.
“I welcome the company’s interest and decision to invest in Malaysia and Elon Musk’s desire to come to Malaysia,” Anwar added in a statement.
Malaysia this year approved an order from Tesla to supply battery electric cars to the country. The Commerce Department said Tesla would open an office, showrooms and service centers in the country and set up a network of charging stations for its cars.
Anwar stated that Tesla operations in Malaysia will start this year.
He added that he also discussed with Musk the Starlink satellite communications service launched by the American billionaire and operated by his company, SpaceX.
And last May, the head of the American electric car manufacturer, Tesla, Elon Musk, discussed in Beijing with Chinese Minister of Industry Jin Chuanglong “the development of new energy vehicles and connected smart cars.”
