The province of Liège will host a large fleet of batteries

Complementary to renewable energies, battery parks are taking up more and more space in the landscape. A 150 megawatt park should see the light of day in Visé.

The battery sector continues to grow to support the energy transition. This Thursday, the Belgian energy supplier Luminus announced that it had applied for a permit to a new 150 megawatt battery park in Viséin the province of Liège.

This park is a major investmentat a time when renewable energies must take up more and more space in the energy mix: “Batteries will make it possible to store excess energy on sunny or windy days to return it later to the network. They will be able ensure demand when there is neither wind nor sun and will allow the electrical system to be optimized throughout the day”, explains the supplier in a press release. This flexibility will prove increasingly necessary in the years to come.

Up to 600 MWh output

The battery park, which should be located near the Luminus hydroelectric power station in Lixhe, at a place called Navagne, will be connected to the Elia grid, the operator of the high-voltage electricity transmission network in Belgium. He is aiming for a electrical restitution capacity of 300 MWh or 600 MWhor the possibility of delivering energy for two or four hours.

For Luminus, this project must also constitute a reinforcement in favor of security of supply from winter 2025-2026a period deemed critical by the system operator.
