Consoles have traditionally enjoyed fixed hardware throughout their life cycle, but mid-gen upgrades have become a reality with the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X. These notably brought 4K support to console gamers, and it looks like Sony and Microsoft are once again planning to release new, more powerful devices in just a few years.

The news comes from reputable Rockstar insider Tez2, who claims on the GTA forums that ” most AAA studios should have received the mid-gen update dev kits or should receive them early in the new year “. The insider backed up his claims when asked if he was sure or if it was just a prediction.

New, even more powerful PS5 and Xbox are coming soon

When the PlayStation 4 was almost three years old, it got a refresh with the PlayStation 4 Pro, and the Xbox One was followed by the Xbox One X after four years. The PlayStation 5 will be three years old in 2023so it was to be expected that new releases would arrive over the next few years.

Developers tend to get upcoming hardware SDKs well before their official releasesso it would not be surprising if the next models of PS5 and Xbox have already been sent to the various studios. Nintendo is also planning a Switch Proand 4K development kits are also said to be already in the wild.

We imagine that the next consoles will be more powerful than the PS5 et Xbox Series Xbut we do not really know for the moment the two video game giants plan to bring them to the market. A release in 2024 is quite likelysince that would stick to the calendar of the previous generation.

Until then, we know that Sony would prepare a PS5 Slim model in 2023, which would have the particularity of using a detachable disk drive. The latter shouldn’t be more powerful than the current generation, but as the name suggests, it could be even more compact.
