A greater number of Latin Americans continue to bet on packing their bags and trying their luck in North America or Europe, either for academic, cultural or; particularly labor. Whether or not they are success stories is something that differs from each person, since it is subject to different aspects and that are not always a determinant: for example, the preparation or if there are relatives in the destination territory.

That is precisely the case of a Colombian who migrated to Barcelona, Spain four months ago, but whose stay has meant more obstacles than opportunities. However, this man recognized that putting his documents in order has been one of the main setbacks to settle and be able to function financially.

“The work is horrible”

“It has been very difficult due to the question of documents. The system is very collapsed by many migrants, there are no appointments for anyone. The work there is fatal, they don’t let him work, they don’t let him advance. (There are) Police everywhere, they don’t let you search the streets, the issue of health is complicated and registration is even more complicated, “he said from his experience.

The complaint in which he emphasized the most was when it came to finding a job, as well as difficulties, even, to get a room due to the number of documents and the money to be delivered in advance. According to him, the panorama extends to other people, whom he claims to have seen in precarious conditions.

“There are many people on the street enduring hunger, cold, without clothes, without food. This is what is experienced here in Barcelona, Spain,” she added. When the Colombian was asked about his perception of the closure of opportunities for the simple fact of being a migrant, he said that he was seized by a feeling of discouragement, not being able to “take a product out on the street.”

His ‘recommendation’ to other compatriots

“Don’t risk the talk (money) coming here because the truth is that the situation is very difficult. It is not how one is painted in Colombia that one arrives here and finds a job right away (…). Here the situation is at a different price, ”she continued and once again emphasized immigration regulations.

According to the Colombian, his case is an example of the inconveniences to work when you do not have a Spanish permit; because the possibilities of contracting are reduced. Street vending, according to his account, is not an alternative either because it is prohibited and it is not common to find this trade on a day-to-day basis.

On TikTok, the video collected dozens of comments among some Internet users who lamented this scenario and others who distanced themselves; Well, for them, migrating has been the ‘best’ decision made. Several comments ratified the experience of some Latinos.

“Juan’s luck is not the same as Pedro’s, I haven’t been there for long; (but) very happy, good job, good health and I’m from Colombia”, “There are so many languages and he decided to speak the truth”, “People just live complaining. I don’t understand, life is hard wherever and however it is”, “Even if you have papers it is hard, imagine yourself without papers”, “Well, can you imagine if there were no laws? Crazy. It’s time to persevere and have a lot of patience.”

Documents to travel to Spain

Although for some people, the experience of migrating could turn out to be something completely different than expected, other attempts can lead to not wanting to return to the country of origin. An alternative possibility is to travel, but with no intention of settling down, but rather to discover other places and broaden the academic or cultural baggage.

The duration in that territory, for those who come from areas outside the European Union, must not exceed three months. Regarding the reason for the trip, tourism, medical treatment, business, visits to relatives, academic development, volunteering and other motivations that do not generate profit are included.

On journeys that are not work, the immigration authorities require the passport and other documents regarding the purpose of the application. If the reasons are professional, it is important to have support such as a company invitation or an invitation to meetings.
