The two thousand fighters of the battalion had made themselves famous during the siege of Mariupol, from February to May 2022, in particular for their resistance in the maze of the Azovstal factory, which they had held fiercely before having to surrender to the Russians .
Azov was talked about again in June by claiming responsibility for attacks against the Russian army in the Zaporijia region. At the time, more than half of its members were still in captivity or missing. Its interim leaders, meanwhile, were released in the fall of 2022 as part of a prisoner swap with Moscow.
The battalion’s titular leaders, Denys Prokopenko, Serhi Volynskyi, Sviatoslav Palamar, Oleh Khomenko and Denys Shleha, were also released in September 2022 by Moscow and then transferred to Turkey, where they were supposed to remain until the end of the war. But, eager to take up arms again, they returned to Ukraine in mid-July, which provoked the fury of the Kremlin.
Since the beginning of the war, the battalion was raised to the rank of brigade, which increased its strength to 7,000 soldiers.
Azov is originally a battalion of volunteers created in 2014 for the conflict in Donbass as a far-right paramilitary movement. This is why Russia has taken Azov as a pretext to announce, in its propaganda justifying the war, its will to “denazification” from Ukraine.
