The rest of the country favors the fish fillet. But in North Jutland, something else hits the Easter table

Easter eggs, geek letters and well-laid lunch tables. Easter is just around the corner, and with it come traditions that, especially on the food front, are open to debate. Because which dish is actually the Danes’ – and especially those from North Jutland – favorite on the Easter table?

HelloFresh has set out to get to the bottom of this with a new survey conducted by the analysis agency YouGov.

Here, the fish fillet takes narrow first place with 14 percent of Danes’ votes, closely followed by tartlets in second place with 13 percent. In joint third place, the leg of lamb and eggs and prawns land with 12 percent each.

But in our part of the country, it is another maritime dish that tops the list.

The study shows that there are significant differences between the regions. In North Jutland, marinated herring is thus the clear winner, where close to one in five (18 percent) have them as the Easter dish above all of them.

The situation is significantly different in Zealand and in the capital area, where respectively only 6 and 7 percent have the fish pieces marinated in everything from curry to dill as their favourite.

And if you ask the meal box supplier behind the study, it is worth taking a look.

– It’s funny to see that the people of North Jutland are crazy about marinated herring. Even when it comes to something as traditional as Easter, the figures show relatively large cultural and geographical differences in an otherwise small country like Denmark, says Sofia Fattori, Head of Culinary at HelloFresh in the Nordics.

In Southern Denmark, on the other hand, it is tartlets that have conquered the Easter table. Here, the little puff pastry shells run with almost every fifth southern Danish vote (18 percent).

Food that gathers

Although the favorite dish on the Easter table depends on where in the country we live, according to the food expert, it is food that brings us together.

– Easter is about many things with its Christian roots, but for many Danes it can be boiled down to which food you look forward to the most. And here the Easter lunch, which is built on several generations of Danish traditions, becomes a gathering point, says Sofia Fattori.

The study also shows that almost every second Dane prefers to serve Danish food to guests. And it is not as surprising as it might sound, she believes.

– 45 percent of Danes actually prefer to offer traditional Danish food when they have guests over. It shows that conventional Danish dishes are something familiar and comfortable in a world full of gastronomic possibilities, where world cuisines have never been more accessible, says Sofia Fattori.

The survey was conducted by the analysis institute YouGov on behalf of HelloFresh in the form of online questionnaires among 1,007 Danish respondents aged 18+ in the period from 12 to 14 February 2024.
