The cultural vitality of Montreal has allowed it to rise to 60th place in a list of the 100 best cities in the world, far behind its eternal rival Toronto which ranks 23rd.

Unveiled Monday, the 2024 edition of the ranking drawn up after the analysis of more than 270 cities by the Vancouver marketing firm Resonance includes five Canadian cities, namely Toronto (23rd), Vancouver (50th), Montreal (60th), Ottawa ( 90th) and Calgary (93rd).

This is a slight decline for the Quebec metropolis which obtained 57th place last year.

Montreal was notably praised by the authors of the ranking for its cultural vitality, which earned it 20th place in the world, and for the quality of its universities which earned it 29th place.

Resonance is particularly enthusiastic about the Espace St-Denis project, which should be completed in 2025 and include the St-Denis theater. The numerous cycle path projects and the pedestrianization of around ten arteries during the summer were also highlighted.

For its part, Toronto, called an “emerging global destination,” has been touted for its continued development that is causing its population to explode. The Queen City was placed 10th in the world for the quality of its universities and 11th for its head offices among the 500 largest companies in the world.

Large metropolises also seem to be popular in the ranking which placed London in first place, followed by Paris, New York, Tokyo and Singapore.
