It’s the return of sleeper trains. This means of transport, which offers access to major cities on the continent by train while spending the night there in converted wagons, continues to diversify. With us, a second line has been accessible since May 26, joining Berlin. The opportunity to discover this Belgian-German connection.
Night trains respond to a growing demand from users wishing to reach other European countries by train. All while protecting the planet. “The time spent on the train is long, but it’s pleasant. It’s a new experience, which you can live differently than by plane. It’s better for the environment”, tells us for example a young traveler.
On board, there are relatively large cabins, with catering services and standard amenities. Problem: the price, with tickets often more than twice as expensive as those offered by aviation. But for this passenger, it’s only a matter of time before that changes. “The more people take the train, the more governments will be encouraged to invest in international rail traffic”, she believes.
These night trains have some limitations, however. The cars are a bit old and the European network is often disrupted, with many works planned at night, which can cause regular delays. But the recipe still works and tends to become popular. According to the FPS Mobility, 62% of Belgians would consider this option, if indeed it proves to be more practical and more competitive than that of the plane.
In Belgium, only two night connections exist. In 2020, Vienna led the way, Berlin followed in May. Other destinations could be added in the coming years, with plans to reach Prague in 2024 and finally Barcelona, in the spring of 2025.
