More and more young people in Japan are involved in cannabis cases, especially since the price of the drug is much cheaper than stimulants and the number of countries that have legalized it has increased, according to the National Agency for the police.

Cannabis trafficking also seems to be growing due to social media, as it is easy for young people to exchange information using these platforms.

Last year, 5,342 people in connection with cannabis possession were arrested in the country, and almost 70% of them were under the age of 30.

The trend has been on the rise since 2014, with a record 5,482 arrests in 2021.
In 2013, approximately 80% of drug cases were related to stimulants, but this rate has largely decreased. In the semester of 2023, for the first time, the share of cannabis-related arrests had been greater than that of stimulant cases.
