The Road to Redemption: LeBron James and Team USA’s Quest for Olympic Gold in Paris 2024

2023-09-09 12:45:00

After the new failure of Team USA yesterday in the semi-final of the World Cup, the United States risks arriving in Paris next year with a hell of an armada to set the record straight. It’s hard to say straight away who will be part of it, but LeBron James has already started teasing.

When your name is LeBron James, the slightest post on social media can quickly cause a big stir. The King is obviously aware of this and never hesitates to release subliminal messages which will then be analyzed closely. New example yesterday, when LeBron dropped a mini comment under a visual of the account NBA Central.

Eyes emoji you know.

Is LeBron James planning to have a final Olympic campaign with Team USA? Does he plan to play alongside some of the biggest names in US basketball to put the United States back on top after the failure of the World Cup?

These are inevitable but also legitimate questions, for several reasons.

From an individual point of view, LeBron James could aim for a third Olympic gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, after that of 2008 with the Redeem Team in Beijing and 2012 in London. Three gold medals is one more you know who (Michael Jordan for those who don’t), and an additional accomplishment that always does the legacy good. In addition, in terms of storytelling, being one of the faces of the revival of the Americans after the failure of the 2023 World Cup (and 2019) can also be tempting, even if we remember that the USA are still the reigning Olympic champions. Finally, it would perhaps be an opportunity for him to play alongside Stephen Curry in a major international competition, the Splash Bro having never participated in an Olympics in his career. LeBron has already said it in the past, playing with Steph is one of his last career wishes.

Whether LeBron – 38 years old and 20 seasons in his legs – decides to come to Paris or not, the question of the Team USA roster for the 2024 Olympics will be central in the redemption project of Grant Hill (boss of Team USA). Who to bring back among the players in the current squad? Can NBA MVP Joel Embiid strengthen the weak American racket? Who will be available next summer to represent the flag?

Many questions therefore, but which above all surround one certainty: the United States will have to send a more solid, more balanced and more experienced team to Paris than this year’s. Because otherwise, a new failure – this time on the big Olympic stage – could plunge Team USA into crisis. Like 20 years ago in Athens.
