Ismaël, a 25-year-old resident of Herstal, received a one-year suspended prison sentence before the Liège Court of Appeal after committing a robbery… just for fun! The funny thing, or not, is that the person concerned has already been convicted of having committed a violent robbery during which a person was deprived of liberty and received blows. It was therefore in a spirit of frank laughter that on November 4, 2021, he appeared at a night trader in Herstal to rob him.
The latter did not find the joke to his liking. Perhaps he lacked humor. Who knows ? In any case, confronted with the individual who was wearing a mouth mask who asked him to give him the contents of his cash register before insisting and threatening to take out a weapon, he preferred to press the button. the alarm which alerted the police rather than laughing.

The merchant, however, did not lose his temper and refused to give him any money. Ismaël left the store and was picked up by the police. He was alone there. During his arrest, immediately following the facts, in a state of obvious intoxication, the young man had already indicated that it was a joke. Overheard a few hours later, the suspect declared that he did not remember anything, given the alcoholic state he was in the day before. He clarified that he had no weapon. He did not mention a challenge or the presence of a friend near the store.
He explained that he had been drinking alcohol with a friend. Concerning the friend in whose company he had consumed Vodka, he said he no longer remembered the moment when their paths parted. A little later, he said that it was actually some kind of challenge. According to him, he drank vodka with a friend and the latter joked with him that he was not capable of carrying out a hold-up. One of his friends also submitted a certificate on this subject. The latter even specified that the merchant had also laughed. The court did not have this analysis. For the magistrates, his behavior leaves no doubt as to his intention to have money given to him and to appropriate it. The court found the extortion attempt established. Ismaël’s little joke cost him a year in prison with suspended probation.
