According to police, a man killed three people in two attacks with a firearm in Rotterdam. The attacks took place in an apartment and in a university hospital.
The man, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, killed a 39-year-old woman in the apartment and initially seriously injured her 14-year-old daughter. He then opened fire in a lecture hall at the nearby Erasmus University Hospital and shot a 46-year-old lecturer there. He also set fires in both places.
The suspect was arrested at the hospital’s helipad. According to police, the daughter of the first victim also died later. Initial investigations revealed that the 32-year-old lived in close proximity to the woman who was killed and her daughter. It initially remained unclear whether he had lessons with the killed lecturer.
According to the police chief of the Dutch metropolis, Fred Westerbeke, the suspected perpetrator is a 32-year-old student. The police did not give a possible motive, but spoke of a “targeted act”. The alleged perpetrator is to be brought before the judge today.
“A lot of panic and screaming”
Videos from the crime scene at the clinic showed how heavily armed police officers in protective equipment entered the clinic before the arrest. People left the building, some with their hands raised. Hospital workers in white coats carried patients to safety using stretchers and wheelchairs.
A medical student told broadcaster RTL Nieuws that four or five shots were fired on the fourth floor of the clinic. An incendiary device was then thrown into the lecture hall area of the clinic. “There was a lot of panic and shouting,” another eyewitness told broadcaster NOS.
Politicians and the royal family were shocked. Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, as did the royal couple. Prime Minister Mark Rutte was also horrified.
