In this era of global warming, the discourse to “get out of it” is very different depending on who holds it. There are those who preach sobriety and degrowth as the only remedies.

In France, for example, where graduation ceremonies have been disrupted by students who advocate degrowth as “the serious track” to combat global warming. And there are the climate “activists” who put companies, such as TotalEnergies, on the index.

Fortunately, faced with this way of responding to climate challenges, there are those who believe in technological solutions. This is the case of an economist, Augustin Landier, who notes that in the United States, as in China and other countries, the word degrowth is practically unknown, especially not used as being the way of fight global warming.

And this economist noted, in an interview recently published by Le Point, that “if France, an ultra-minority in carbon emissions at the global level, follows the path of circles that demand degrowth and sobriety, this will have no impact on the CO2 emissions of the planet!” Is it enough to be exemplary to be saved?

You have to get used to more sobriety. Global warming, which cannot be denied, forces us to change our habits. But encouraging degrowth is, in my opinion, shooting yourself in the foot. It is to promote “stunting” when technologies, green innovation, can bring a lot to meet the challenges we face.
