During the Samsung event mentioned in my article on the Galaxy Z Flip 4, I indicated that the manufacturer had unveiled other products. Among them was the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4the other terminal with a foldable screen.
Just like the Z Flip 4, I’ll list the main features while pointing out the differences from the previous generation. On the other hand, this time, I will start with the design of the device. Like the Z Flip 4, the Z Fold 4 is recognizable at first glance.
Galaxy Z Fold 4, mi-smartphone, mi-tablette
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is the other Samsung smartphone with a foldable display. It is all the more incredible thatit goes from a smartphone to a mini-tablet in a single gesture. Its screen is huge and it is very valuable for certain types of use. The other side of the coin is the size of the terminal. Unlike the Z Flip 4 which knows how to be discreet, this one is noticeable by measurements which remain imposing.
If you do not know this mobile, it will be much easier to realize it with some figures. In the closed position, it measures 155.1 x 67.1 x 15.8 mm. This width corresponds to the largest one, at the hinge. Deployed, the terminal passes 155.1 x 130.1 mm. As for the weight, it takes 263g.
The first point to note is that this new smartphone is lighter than the previous edition. We go from 271g on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 at 263g on the new version. As for the dimensions, they are very close.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip
Like its little brother the Z Flip 4, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is equipped with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor to which we add 12GB RAM. The 2021 model contained a Snapdragon 888 chip. Before, users had the choice between 256 and 512 GB of storage capacity. Now they can also opt for 1TB.
A very nice 7.6″ AMOLED screen
When you have already had such a device in your hands, you can only be impressed by the diagonal of the main slab. This is a 7.6″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen offering a QXGA+ definition (2176 x 1812px). The refresh rate can reach 120Hz. We therefore observe the same diagonal as on the previous model.
As soon as you open the device, you find yourself in the presence of a mini-tablet. It’s super nice to play and watch videos. It’s also handy for displaying two or even three applications at the same time. I specify that this was already possible with the previous generation.
On the outside, the user still has a second screen. It measures 6.2″ and it is also an Amoled 2X panel. The latter offers HD + definition and a 23.1: 9 ratio.
Thanks to this second display, the user can check his emails or messages, review his photos, launch an application… No need to open his device to perform a set of actions.
A triple photo module including a 50Mpx wide angle
To take photos and videos, the owner of the smartphone can use the 5 different sensors. We find in fact a grand angle de 50Mpxand ultra grand-angle de 12Mpxand 10MP telephoto lens (3X Optical Zoom and 10x Space Zoom) on the back. Then there is a 10MP camera on the 6.2″ external screen, while the large slab receives a final 4MP sensor (under the screen).
The user will be able to capture scenes in 8K at 24fps and 4K at 30 or 60fps. Like the Z Flip 4, it offers many modes including Super Slow Motion and Hyperlapse.
I recall that the Z Fold 3 had 3 12MP photo modules on the back. Moreover, we can notice that Samsung has kept the same types of cameras.
Finally, the Z Fold 4 benefits from a certification IP X8 and scores a 7.8 on the Repairability Index, the same as last year’s version.
A battery identical to that of the Z Fold 3
To power this mobile, Samsung has planned a 4400mAh battery. On the new generation of the Z Flip, the manufacturer has increased the battery capacity. On the Z Fold 4, no evolution compared to the previous model and a priori, no evolution either on the side of autonomy.
To charge the super fast charge compatible battery, you can connect the device to a 25W charger sold in addition or do it via wireless charging technology. Via the optional charger, Samsung announces that the Z Fold 4 can go from 0 to 50% in about 30min.
The Z Fold 4 is compatible with the S-Pen stylus
When the Z Fold 3 was launched, Samsung indicated that its terminal was compatible with the S-Pen stylus. It’s a particular version – not the same as on the Galaxy Note – and it is only available as an option. For this new version, the accessory remains relevant. It is therefore still possible to use this superb panel with the S-Pen Fold Edition stylus. The latter accepts 4096 pressure levels and offers several features.
Unfortunately, it is still optional and still cannot be stored within the terminal. It’s a shame, because it would have been very practical to be able to hide it in the hull. Now, given the dimensions of the Z Fold 4, I’m not sure users would have accepted a thicker smartphone. Also, not everyone uses a stylus.
There is one last point to clarify regarding this accessory: it can be used exclusively on the large screen of the smartphone.
Galaxy Z Fold 4: available from 1799 euros
This new version of the foldable smartphone is available in three colors: Anthracite, Black or Ivory. Another color is sold exclusively on the manufacturer’s website: Bordeaux.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is available from 1799 euros. You can find it on the store Samsung as well as at brand retailers. This is exactly the same price as the Z Fold 3 when it was released. So unlike the Z Flip 4 which saw its price increase (compared to the previous edition), no change for the Z Fold 4… for the 256GB version.
For the 12/512GB version, you have to pay 1919 euros against 1899 euros for the same capacity on the Z Fold3. As for the 1TB model, the price rises to 2159 euros.
Given the prices, it is clearly not a smartphone for everyone, mainly in relation to the budget necessary to afford it. Then, the dimensions of the latter can also hinder some buyers. On the other hand, it has two very nice screens and offers many possibilities of use.
