He fainted fifteen minutes after being vaccinated against the papillomavirus. The teenager hospitalized after a fall on October 19 during a vaccination campaign carried out in a college in Saint-Herblain, in the suburbs of Nantes, finally died, announces the regional health agency (ARS) of Pays-de-la -Loire this Monday.

“Despite the intervention of the Smur team hired by Samu 44 and his treatment at the Nantes University Hospital, his condition deteriorated in the following days in relation to the severity of the head trauma. The student died on October 27,” reports the ARS, which “would like to send its most sincere condolences to his family.” “We share the pain of the teams from his school and his classmates,” adds the agency.

“Without link to the vaccine product”, assures the ARS

The young victim was in 5th grade at the Saint-Dominique private college in Saint-Herblain. She had felt unwell, which caused a heavy fall on the head and the occurrence of “head trauma”. “This type of discomfort can occur due to the stress caused by vaccination but is unrelated to the vaccine product or to a defect in the quality of the vaccine,” assured the regional health agency this Monday, repeating what it had already stated ten days ago.

However, an administrative investigation was opened. It will ensure “establishing the conditions for carrying out vaccination and its medical surveillance in the establishment, as well as the conditions for the medical care of the child”, indicates the regional health authority.

Monitoring for vaccine side effects

The National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) announced on October 17, just before the accident, that it would carry out “reinforced monitoring” of the side effects of the papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Organized in voluntary colleges, the vaccination campaign started at the beginning of October for 5th grade students. Students will receive a first dose this fall or winter, and a second six months later, in their college and during school time. The injections are carried out by mobile teams of caregivers from outside the establishment.

Each year in France, “human papillomaviruses” are responsible for more than 6,000 new cases of cancer, most often of the cervix. The government is targeting 80% vaccination of middle school students by 2030.
