The deceased was born in the USA. in 1942 and came from a family originally from Kassos which has recorded a long history in the shipping business, at least since the 1830s.

Stathis Michael Kouloukountis was the second of the three sons of Michael H. Kouloukounidis and Fotini (Nitsa) Yannagas. Michael H. Kulukundis was the youngest of the famous five Kulukundis brothers who founded Rethymnis & Kulukundis Ltd (R&K) in London in 1922, in collaboration with the Rethymnis Brothers.

Stathis Michael Kouloukountis graduated from Blair Academy in New Jersey in 1960. He attended the University of Pennsylvania where he received a degree in Economics in 1965. He then joined the family business of R&K in London, under whose management bulk carrier, tankers and ore/oil carriers.

Throughout his business career he associated his name with the Greek shipping community in London and the representation of the collective interests of Greek shipping, serving the Greek Shipping Co-operation Committee as a member of the Board, for more than 4 decades, reaching the position of Vice President. In honor of his contribution to the Committee, he was named Honorary Vice-President.

He was also a member of the Boards of Directors of the Greek Shipowners Association, the International Shipping Federation, the International Chamber of Shipping and the Baltic Exchange.

Stathis Kouloukountis: Rich articles in the maritime press as well

In addition to his participation in institutional representation bodies, he also participated with his articles in the maritime press. He was a long-time columnist for the Maritime Chronicles, from the beginning of the 1970s. In his column, he shared his thoughts on maritime current affairs while always being an advocate of the collective institutional voice of Greek shipping.

Stathis Michael Kouloukountis leaves behind his wife Koula and their two children, Marianna and Michael as well as his stepson, Alexandros.
