On November 22, 2021, the murder of Mauricio Leal and his mother Marleny Hernández left all of Colombia in shock. Although, at the beginning it was tried to show that the ‘celebrity stylist’ had stabbed his mother and later took his own life, as he pointed out in a letter that was next to the crime scene, in the end it was learned that both They were murdered by -presumably- their brother Jhonier Leal, since all the evidence that was found pointed towards him.
Although this man seemed surprised and hurt the day the bodies were found in his relative’s house, he never had any qualms about going out to give any interview that came his way; and although he indicated that he was going to honor Mauricio’s memory by continuing his legacy in the chain of hair salons that he inherited from him, his behavior left much to be desired, adding to this the inconsistencies in his statements. JHONIER LEAL BECAME THE MAIN SUSPECT IN THE DEATH OF HIS BROTHER AND MOTHER
As recalled, Jhonier Leal went with Mauricio’s driver to his brother’s house, after he did not attend a meeting. Upon entering the main room he saw his relatives in a pool of blood. They were dead. Although it was assumed that the stylist had been responsible for everything, he immediately became the main suspect in the double crime, but he already had a claim that he was not at the mansion that day, something that was denied by the police. security cameras, added to this were the inconsistencies and traces of blood that were found in his property.
Thus, on January 15, 2022, the Colombian authorities arrested him and the Attorney General’s Office accused him of being the murderer of his brother and mother. Seeing the evidence against him and feeling cornered, Jhonier Leal accepted having committed the crime, so he signed a pre-agreement, but then recanted, arguing that he was poorly advised and said that he was going to face a trial.

WHERE DO YOU FACE THE PROCESS FROM?
In the middle of the process, Leal was ordered to be held in La Picota prison in Bogotá, the center from where he faces the process. In May 2023, the Prosecutor’s Office requested 60 years in prison for Jhonier Leal, whom he accused of the crimes of aggravated homicide and manipulation of material evidence.
Despite having everything ready, Jhonier Leal’s defense delayed the process on several occasions, which is why the hearing was postponed up to four times. The last time it occurred was on August 31, 2023 when his lawyer Ana Julieth Velásquez argued that she was sick. This was taken as a mockery by the prosecutor’s office, which asked a Forensic Medicine expert to evaluate her state of health and locate the medical center where she was.
Feeling that her privacy was being violated, the lawyer resigned from Leal’s defense on September 1.

IS JHOIER LEAL INNOCENT?
The case could take an unexpected turn, since a woman appeared to ensure that Jhonier did not commit the crime, but Mauricio Leal’s other brother: Carlos Andrés García.
According to her statement, he contacted her to tell her of his desire to murder his mother and brother because they did not support him financially to pursue criminal proceedings while he was behind bars. Both García and Jhonier are in prison, publishes The Herald of Colombia.

The Netflix production “Story of a Crime: Mauricio Leal” is inspired by this dark real case. According to the synopsis, “when a celebrity stylist is found stabbed along with his mother, a young investigator only has twenty days to solve the case.”
