The shoddy compassion of Christian Dubé

“We are thinking of the patients who may be affected by the strike.” This is the pearl that the Minister of Health, Christian Dubé, offered us during the first day of strike in the network.

We already knew that the minister is failing miserably to oil the system. Now we have confirmation that he is seriously lacking in discernment.

Victims

Mr. Dubé claims to have a “thought” for the victims of the strike. But does he have even the embryo of a “thought” for all the daily martyrs of the health system for which he is responsible?

Does he have a thought for all Quebecers without a family doctor?

A thought for patients unable to consult a general practitioner?

A thought for patients who are desperately waiting for surgery?

A thought for those whose surgery was canceled due to lack of available staff?

A thought for those who have been waiting in the emergency room for 10, 15, or even 6 p.m.?

A thought for those whose initially treatable illness has become incurable, due to lack of timely care?

A thought for those who, failing to obtain medical assistance to live, resign themselves to requesting medical assistance to die?

Junk

Given that the “free” health care system, which nevertheless costs each Quebecer more than $6,600 annually, abandons several thousand sick people every day, Mr. Dubé’s shoddy compassion in the context of the strike is obscene.

But, since Mr. Dubé has “thoughts”, perhaps he should have one of gratitude for the private health system. Because it is thanks to him that a growing number of people left behind by the public network manage to obtain care and, consequently, do not rise up massively to demand the resignation of the Minister of Health.

On the other hand, there is no doubt that the patient forced to pay for a private consultation also has a “thought” for Mr. Dubé!
