Colombia had several very feared mafia bosses, some more bloodthirsty than others. However, the period that Griselda Blanco dominated stood out among all of them, since her story is much more sinister than the fiction of the film that Netflix has just made about her, with Sofía Vergara as the central character.

Reliving Griselda’s life is not pleasant for many Colombians, who suffered the scourge of drug trafficking, even if it is a sweetened Hollywood-style version.
Blanco had several nicknames. She was called “The Black Widow,” for having murdered three husbands, or “The Godmother,” because of her comparison to the film “The Godfather” by Francis Ford Coppola, which she was passionate about. She also for having sponsored Pablo Escobar Gaviria in the formation of the Medellin Cartel.
A hard life from a young age, which included abuse and violence, turned her into a dominant woman, with a brutal and cruel personality. Griselda was one of the “pioneers” of cocaine trafficking to the United States during the 1970s and 1980s, with a well-established organization that Escobar later continued to use. She ended up, like many traffickers, executed in cold blood by her rivals.
Griselda’s mother became pregnant by her employer, a rich man who did not want to recognize the baby. From that moment on, the woman lived as she could in the Caribbean city of Santa Marta, in northern Colombia. When Griselda was 11 years old, they both moved to Medellin. Her mother walked the streets of the city and the little girl began to commit crimes with a gang that she had put together. They engaged in petty theft and looting.
