The Slow Adoption of 5G in Belgium: A Closer Look at Coverage in Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels

2023-11-05 18:30:04

Already deployed in many countries, 5G is slow to take off here.

If Flanders already has a large 5G network, the tone is very different in Wallonia and Brussels. At the time of writing, Brussels is still almost entirely without a 5G network and only a very small part of Wallonia has its 5G network.

It is in fact the capital region which was the slowest to put in place the legislation necessary for the deployment of 5G, since it made the necessary changes in June, as Haroun Fenaux explained to us, spokesperson at Proximus.

If we compare the 5G coverage map of the different operators, we can get the impression that Telenet is one step ahead, both on Flemish territory and on Walloon territory. But it should be noted that Telenet’s card also includes 5G “light”, which is not normally included in other operators’ cards.

« Currently, more than 1,015 mobile sites offer 5G coverage and more than 290 municipalities have one or more active 5G antennas on their territory. The vast majority of sites were activated in Flanders, in and around the main Flemish cities, such as Antwerp, Ghent, Genk, Leuven, Mechelen, Aalst, Hasselt, Kortrijk, Lokeren and the coastal areas. Coverage in these cities is already impressive, with population coverage ranging from 55% to 80% » explains Coralie Miserque, spokesperson at Telenet.

But Orange and Proximus are not left out, especially since they both have a head start in a particular territory: Brussels. If progress on the ground in the Capital is indeed still very timid, it is starting to be made, especially in the extreme outskirts of the region.

In March 2023 (with approval in June 2023), “ the Brussels Parliament voted for a new ordinance in plenary session. […] The new emissions standard will increase the outdoor power level from 6V/m combined for all operators, all technologies and all frequency bands to 14.5V/m. This allows the deployment of 5G to begin in the Brussels region. » explains Proximus. “ In the long term, however, we still expect limitations as this remains much stricter than the standards recommended by the WHO, which are applied in most European countries. » For Wallonia, on the other hand, Proximus is more optimistic: “ Wallonia aligns with the agreement concluded in Flanders at the end of July 2022 “, even if once again ” the standards set by the Regions remain more restrictive than European emission standards. »

And for Orange? “ We already have the first sites in service in Brussels and Wallonia. Coverage will gradually increase as we obtain environmental approvals and are able to deploy 5G. » Margaux Vigneron explains to us.

In all 3 cases, it will be noted that although coverage in Flanders is already well developed, only a few very rare areas are covered in Wallonia, mainly in Hainaut and the province of Liège.

Below, you will find in order the map of the Proximus 5G network, followed by that of the Orange network and that of the Telenet network. It is good to note that this also includes 5G “light” using 4G bandwidths
