For the 17th time, the best theater productions for young audiences were awarded the Stella Prizes on Friday evening. The winners were honored in six categories at the award ceremony in Linz Central in cooperation with the “50 Years of Children’s Theater” festival. A majority of the awards this year went to Vienna.
The jury chose the play “Play for Time” by the Vienna company Freispiel as “Outstanding Production for Children”, while the joint work “King Kong Vivienne” by the Vienna Thirteenth Theater Production and the Vorarlberg State Theater won the “Outstanding Production for Young People” category. In the “Outstanding Actor” category, Felix Pacher impressed in the adaptation of the novel “Tschick” by Wolfgang Herrndorf at the Vienna State Opera.
The prize for “Outstanding Music” also went to Vienna. Martin Seiwert received an award here for his work on “The Dead Class” by Toxic Dreams at the WUK. Paul Barritt and the Burgtheaterstudio can once again be pleased about the “Outstanding Equipment” award in “More than Everything in the World”. Upper Austria was able to score points in the special prize “Participative Projects” – specifically the play “Grimm! – The really true story of Little Red Riding Hood and her Wolf” by Jugend plays Theater, a cooperation between the Linz State Theater and the Upper Austrian State Music School Association.
The management duo of the Viennese puppet theater Lilarum, Traude and Paul Kossatz, were awarded the special prize from the board of ASSITEJ Austria (umbrella association of the Austrian performing arts scene for young audiences).
The Stella is the first Austria-wide prize for outstanding achievements in the performing arts for young audiences and has been awarded since 2007. For this year’s award ceremony, the four-person jury viewed a total of 137 productions from all over Austria in 2022 and ultimately made 24 nominations for productions from 19 different theater groups and houses from seven federal states.
