Recently, Denis Irwin returned to our journalists on the underside of his transfer from Oldham Athletic to Manchester United.
“At the time I was letting my contract run out at Oldham, because I wanted to move”
Denis told us about his state of mind before leaving Oldham.
“Even though there was no Bosman stop at the time, I knew Sir Alex had been watching me, as I had seen him at Boundary Park. In addition, we often used to have a list of people who came to observe us.
“Sheffield Wednesday and Big Ron Atkinson were also interested,” he then clarified.
“And I knew Manchester City had been watching me since pre-season too.”

“But United submitted an offer on June 6 which had to be accepted by Oldham or the case would have gone to the transfer court”
continued the former side.
“We could have waited another three weeks but, of course, I agreed to sign directly. I had just had four brilliant years at Oldham and just felt it was the right time to move to a higher level.
Joe Royle, the boss of the Latics at the time, certainly had no intention of opposing the dream of his favorite player at the time…
“Alex told me he had watched the guy over 20 times, before he submitted his offer, and had never seen a single bad game from him”
Royle recalled.
“That was the reality of Denis Irwin: a guy who never lets you down.”
And that’s pretty much summed up, given the incredible £650,000 part of the Red Devils legend’s career at Old Trafford, it was clearly a bargain, even for the time.
