Seized by the Pro Anima association, the Strasbourg administrative court annulled on January 30 the prefectural decree authorizing the activity of the primatology center. The institution was in the sights of several associations defending the animal cause.

β€œAt the request of the administrative court, a public inquiry into the environmental impact was carried out and following this inquiry, we regained our approval on April 4,” explained Michel de Mathelin.

Named Silabe (“Simian Laboratory Europe”), the primatology center has been installed since 1978 in a former fort in Niederhausbergen (Bas-Rhin), where an average of 800 animals of nine different species are housed under the supervision of a specialized team of 25 people.

According to Silabe’s website, its activities include “housing and supplying primates for biomedical research, selling biological samples, carrying out experimental studies, training, species conservation and hosting researchers specialized in the field of cognitive neuroscience and animal behavior.
