Adam Sandler may not be nominated for an Oscar this weekend for Murder Mystery 2, but he can take solace in the fact that the romantic comedy-thriller helped him become the highest-paid actor in Hollywood last year, according to Forbes.
Sandler’s success at Netflix, where he produced and appeared in three films in 2023, contributed to his earnings of $73 million, the magazine reported.
That put him above “Barbie” star Margot Robbie, who at 33 is the youngest person in the top 10 highest-paid people in a decade.
Robbie was also a producer on “Barbie” – the biggest box office hit of 2023 – and the cult hit Saltburn.
Tom Cruise ranks third on Forbes list; “Barbie” co-star Ryan Gosling shares fourth place with Matt Damon, and Sandler’s Murder Mystery co-star Jennifer Aniston is sixth.

Sandler and Aniston play a married couple of hapless private detectives in the entertaining “Mystery on the Ship” saga.
The second installment of the saga was the fifth most watched film on Netflix last year, with 173 million hours watched.
Of course, it was never an Oscar contender and received strong criticism from some experts: The Observer called it a “gross comedy” and CNN said the best thing about it “is that it’s fortunately short.”
But for other critics, the film was a pleasant surprise. The Los Angeles Times admitted that the leads “are better than they need to be,” while Vulture posed, “How dare Murder Mystery 2 be good?”
Last year, Sandler’s lucrative relationship with Netflix also saw him write, produce and voice the animated character Leo; Additionally, he produced and starred in the comedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.
This year he already starred in the science fiction drama Spaceman, also for Netflix.

“There is no such thing as ‘too much Sandler,'” the company said when renewing the actor’s contract after the success of the original “Mystery” in 2019.
His earnings were also boosted by 44 live comedy performances he did last year, Forbes reported.
It’s the first time Sandler has topped the magazine’s list since 2002.
Tyler Perry was the highest paid in 2022, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at the top the previous three years. But none of them are in the last top 10.
