The tiger mosquito is spreading in Meurthe-et-Moselle. The department has been placed on red alert by the Grand-Est Regional Health Agency. For the past two years, the insect, originally from Southeast Asia, has been proliferating on our territory and in the rest of metropolitan France. 71 departments are now colonized by the tiger mosquito, according to the Ministry of Health.

High temperatures and lack of water allowed the insect to multiply in the territory. In the department, it was spotted for the first time in the gardens of rue Vauban, Blandan district, in Nancy in 2021. Since its appearance, it continues to proliferate in the neighborhood.

How to spot tiger mosquitoes?

With the return of the sun, the inhabitants of the neighborhood are gradually leaving. They take advantage of their garden or their balcony and sometimes have a bad surprise. Kenny, for example, came face to face with a tiger mosquito. “Last week I saw one on my wall and killed itsays the young man, who recognized him by his color. Black, a little grey”.

The small mosquito, less than 0.5 centimeters, easily spotted by its white and black stripes. Its bites also cause severe itching. Sarah, a resident of rue Vauban, has already paid the price. “It hurts a lot, it itches and it swells, it’s not very pleasant”she assures.

Tips to protect yourself

More disturbing, the insect can transmit several viruses, including dengue fever, chikungunya and Zika. Inès has never seen one before but she is wary. “It’s disturbing all the same, these are diseases that are a little scary”, she worries. But the Regional Health Agency wants to be reassuring: “in our department, we see very, very few cases and for the moment, none in the city of Nancy”tempers Laurent Subileau, sanitary engineer at ARS Grand-Est.

All the tricks are good to protect against it: wear long clothes or use a mosquito net. Camille has already tried everything. “Lemongrass, products and repellents but it doesn’t work, I think my skin is too sweet”she jokes.

In order to avoid its proliferation, the health authorities advise to regularly empty all containers that may contain water, especially the cups under flowerpots, where female mosquitoes are likely to lay their eggs.
