Inventions and flashes of inspiration are the focus of the new special exhibition at the Vorarlberg Museum inatura in Dornbirn. The exhibition “The Tinkering Geniuses” traces the path of numerous inventions, such as those of the car, the telephone, penicillin and X-rays.
Some inventions came out of sudden inspiration, by chance, even as the result of a mishap, while others took generations to develop and develop. For example, the show traces the invention of the wheel, which lies in the dark, through to its further development into a means of transport, such as the bicycle and the first car that Carl Benz built and that his wife Berta successfully tested on a long-distance journey.

According to inatura, the interactive exhibition in cooperation with the Graz children’s museum FRida & freD not only tells of the really great inventions such as plastic (1907), the computer (1941) or the satellite (1957), but also things from our everyday life Place. Who invented the trampoline, jeans or the skateboard and why?
“Children grow up in a flood of inventions. Something is constantly being reinvented, something is constantly being improved and further developed. Children live in the age of the ‘new media’ and take technology for granted. But what has been lost today is the ability to see behind the scenes,” said inatura Managing Director Peter Schmid at the opening on Friday, which had to take place without an audience due to the Corona situation.

The show is aimed primarily at children and can be seen from today, Friday, until November 6th.
The special exhibition gives guests the opportunity to rediscover everyday things, explained Ruth Swoboda, Director of Natural Sciences. “Right now we live in a time where tinkering with problems and inventiveness are required,” she emphasized. The aim of the show is to arouse curiosity, sharpen perspectives and create space for new ideas. Visitors should also think about which current inventions are important and what should be used and invented in the future.
