The Truth About Today’s Young Workers: Dispelling the Myths

2024-04-10 16:28:45

« Today’s young people love luxury, despise authority and gossip instead of working “, Socrates already said to Plato in the 4th century BC. Although several centuries have passed since this declaration, preconceived ideas about young people and their relationship to work have not evolved much.

Except that in reality, today, more young people than their elders are invested in their work! This is what a Apec investigation carried out in partnership with the think tank Terra Nova published in 2023. Nearly half (47%) of 18-29 year olds consider their work to be as much, or even more, important than other parts of their life… compared to only 36% of those aged over 44 years.

« What older people point out as a decline in investment among young people sometimes reveals a little jealousy and their own disengagement », Points out Manuelle Malot, careers director at Edhec and founder of the NewGen Talent Centre, a center of expertise on new workplace behaviors among young people.

Salary, interesting work and work-life balance

In terms of aspirations, the main criteria for choosing a job differ little from one age group to another. Still according to the Apec-Terra Nova survey, the elements considered as a priority when choosing a job are the same for everyone, namely: having a good salary, interesting work and a good work-life balance.

So, are there really differences between generations in their relationships and behaviors at work? What if the connection to work did not really depend on age, but on other factors? Answers in our video decryption.
