The UK announces the largest Ukraine package to date and increased defense spending

The package will be worth 500 million pounds, corresponding to around NOK 6.8 billion, Sunak’s government says on their websites.

The package was announced in connection with a visit to Warsaw on Tuesday, where Sunak met Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Sunak has been under pressure from his own party to equip the defense faster, after he argued that this could only happen when the economy improved.

– In a world that is at its most dangerous since the end of the Cold War, we cannot become complacent. As our rivals unite, we must do more to defend our country, our interests and our values, Sunak said.

Furthermore, he refers to the rearmament as a turning point for European and British security.

Among what is included in the Ukraine package are around 400 vehicles, 60 boats, more than 1,600 rockets and 4 million rounds of ammunition. The government refers to it as “our largest delivery of vital equipment ever”, and writes that it ensures the rapid delivery of badly needed ammunition, air defenses, drones and support for production. The total contribution to Ukraine with the package will be 3 billion pounds, according to Downing Street.

Later, the trip goes to Germany for a meeting with German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz.

Ukraine has long sounded the alarm about a lack of both people and ammunition. At the weekend, an agreement was finally reached in the House of Representatives on a long-awaited new, large aid package from the USA. It is expected to be adopted in the Senate on Tuesday.
