“The Unsuccessful Combination of Vincent Kompany as Player-Manager at RSC Anderlecht: Insights from Hendrik Van Crombrugge”

In the summer of 2019, RSC Anderlecht made a big investment by bringing Vincent Kompany back to Belgium. Vince Le Prince became player-manager of the club, although Hendrik Van Crombrugge quickly realized that this combination would not be successful.

“I never believed in this concept,” Van Crombrugge said in an interview with Radio Radzinski. “At such a level it just can’t work. You can’t focus 100 per cent on your body and then deal with the outside world and come up with tactical plans,” explains the keeper.

This concept did not last long. In October, Frank Vercauteren was appointed as Anderlecht’s head coach. But Kompany and Vercauteren haven’t had the best relationship. “Well, at the time, Kompany had a particularly romantic view of football as a coach,” says Van Crombrugge.

“Frank was more realistic and there were certainly conflicts. But there was no real quarrel as it was written at the time,” explains the goalkeeper.
