«Pure and simple extortion! A masquerade that will undermine American scientific research!The lawyers of the pharmaceutical giant Merck did not mince their words, Monday, June 6, in their appeal against the American government before a federal court in Washington. The legal complaint, initiated by a group with 14 billion dollars in profits in 2022, aimed above all at the legality of the measures included in the famous Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) promulgated in August 2022, including the social and pharmaceutical component, intends to reduce the exorbitant price of medicines mainly intended for the elderly. The IRA thus authorizes for the first time the “Medicare”, the public health insurance which covers 63 million Americans over 65, to negotiate these prices directly with the laboratories.
