Since its founding, the ten ensemble members, who work in a wide variety of artistic fields, have been working together on the conception and implementation of this extraordinary project.

The orchestra’s instruments consist of numerous unusual vegetable instruments, which are made from, among other things, carrots, cellar tubers, eggplants, peppers, dried pumpkins, parsley or onion peels and are usually only durable for the duration of a performance. The sounds that emerge from these instruments are astonishingly complex: transparent, crackling, shrill, hypnotic, futuristic, delicate, hard, funky and groovy. Over the years, the orchestra has developed a variety of pieces of music, creating a unique and distinctive musical and performative universe.

Through countless international media reports, The Vegetable Orchestra became known worldwide within just a few years. The ensemble has performed at renowned festivals as well as in theaters and concert halls around the world. The orchestra is now also mentioned in music encyclopedias, travel guides, theses and school books.

To properly celebrate its 25th anniversary, The Vegetable Orchestra will give an anniversary concert at the ORF RadioKulturhaus in Vienna. On this evening, pieces from the orchestra’s repertoire, which has grown over the decades, as well as brand new compositions that will be heard for the first time, will be performed.
