MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 26, 2023) The West Virginia University volleyball team (9-14, 2-8 Big 12) fell in three sets on Thursday night to the Jayhawks at the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena in Lawrence, Kansas. KU took the match with scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-19.

Junior outside hitter Hailey Green once again lead the team in kills, collecting 14. Sophomore outside hitter Bailey Miller and freshman middle blocker Maddy McGath followed behind with 9 and 6, respectively.

West Virginia collected 32 digs, 31 assists, three blocks and two service aces against the Jayhawks.

Kansas started off the match with a pair of kills, taking the early 2-0 advantage. Freshman middle blocker Emma Beretich went on to knot the score at five with a kill. Both sides of the court were showered with points, until Kansas would storm off with a 4-0 run, making the score 18-12. Green gave West Virginia the last three points of the set, before the Jayhawks sealed the first, 25-17.

The Jayhawks kicked off the second set with three straight points but were halted by a kill from McGath making the score, 4-3 Kansas. A five-point run from KU would silence the West Virginia offense, as the Jayhawks took a comfortable 15-10 lead at the halfway point. A late kill from Miller couldn’t hold off KU, as they went on to take the second, 25-15.

West Virginia struck first in the third, with a picture-perfect kill from Beretich. KU clapped back with another four-point run, taking the 6-2 lead. An error from the Jayhawks and Green kill would bring the score to a two-point difference, 8-6. The Mountaineers closed in on KU with an ace from McGath at the end, before Kansas would take the third and final set, 25-19.

The Mountaineers cap the series against Kansas on Friday, Oct. 26 in Lawrence, at the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena. First serve is slated for 7:30 p.m., ET.
