To date, the question of Western Sahara is still not resolved. The territory is still recognized by the UN as “non-autonomous“, i.e. not decolonized, “whose populations are not yet completely self-administering“. In fact, 80% of the territory is controlled by Rabat. But a political movement called Polisario, supported by Algeria, is calling for a referendum under the aegis of the UN to obtain its total independence.

From, “the Western Sahara file has been integrated into the Moroccan narrative as a subject of national interest“, writes Tilila Sara Kakrim, in a note from the Foundation for Strategic Research.”This dispute goes beyond a question of borders since it embodies the territorial integrity of the country, dear to the narrative of the State and clearly opposed to the Algerian narrative, which does not recognize the Moroccanness of Western Sahara.
