The Witcher 3 Remastered launches on September 29, 2026, delivering enhanced visuals, comprehensive gameplay revamps, and the first two expansions completely free to existing owners on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, according to IGN. Nintendo Switch owners will need to purchase a separate, native Nintendo Switch 2 version.
Hardware Optimizations and Modern Rendering Pipelines
CD Projekt Red is bringing substantial under-the-hood upgrades to its 2015 open-world RPG. On PC, the remastered build introduces support for high-end rendering technologies including Nvidia DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 4, Intel XESS 2.0, path tracing, and ray reconstruction. According to IGN, the update also features native DirectX 12 integration, rendering parallelization, enhanced ray-tracing features, a global lighting rework, subsurface scattering, a new tone mapper, and even ray-traced hair.
Console players aren’t left behind. IGN notes that the PlayStation 5 Pro will receive dedicated support alongside Xbox Play Anywhere functionality. Meanwhile, Nintendo Switch 2 users get a bespoke platform release complete with unspecified exclusive features, though the upgrade path excludes owners of the original hardware iteration.
Core Mechanics and Progression Overhauls
Beyond aesthetic adjustments such as denser foliage, improved HDR, and a refreshed motion blur pipeline, the development team has re-engineered core gameplay loops. The title brings redesigned combat interactions, smoother movement mechanics, and improved horse handling. Monster behaviors have been rewritten to demand more tactical engagement from players.
Progression systems also receive a modern touch. The Remastered edition introduces a skill tree revamp, armor transmogrification, an expanded photo mode, and new finishing animations. Cross-platform mod support finally arrives alongside streamlined quest tracking, immersive meditation options, refined UI elements, a looting rework, and modernized tutorials.
Expansion Bundling Ahead of Songs of the Past
Existing players won’t pay a dime for the base game upgrade. Because of this zero-dollar threshold for current owners, CD Projekt Red has integrated the first two expansions—Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine—at no additional cost for everyone.

The Remastered package and its bundled expansions land just ahead of Songs of the Past, a third expansion slated for a 2027 release. IGN confirms that Songs of the Past will place heavy emphasis on Gwent, expanding the universe’s card game.
Looking Forward to The Witcher 4
As the studio prepares for the September launch, broader franchise developments continue to take shape. CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michał Nowakowski previously addressed the studio’s upcoming slate, noting that more than 500 developers are currently assigned to the next major entry in the saga.

According to IGN, The Witcher 4 will shift its protagonist focus to Ciri. While no gameplay was shown at Gamescom, the studio has targeted a 2028 release window for what the executive described as their “biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date.” Until then, the September 29 rollout gives players a technical playground to revisit the continent.
