Most of Luzon to experience rains due to Habagat
Most of Luzon will continue to experience persistent rains as the Southwest Monsoon, locally known as “Habagat,” blankets the region, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). State meteorologists reported that the seasonal weather pattern is being actively reinforced by powerful weather systems swirling just outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
The Twin Weather Systems Strengthening the Southwest Monsoon
According to PAGASA weather updates, the intensification of the Habagat is driven by external tropical systems. In its late August briefing, PAGASA forecaster Benison Estareja noted that Super Typhoon Saudel and a low-pressure area near Eastern China are pulling moisture across the country, significantly enhancing the monsoon flow over the western sections of Luzon and the Visayas.
Data from GMA Network highlighted that Typhoon Saudel was tracking thousands of kilometers east of Northern Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 150 km/h and gusts reaching 185 km/h before its expected entry into the PAR. Meanwhile, other monitored systems, including tropical depressions, have compounded regional atmospheric instability, bringing rough coastal conditions and heavy downpours to vulnerable provinces.
Geographic Reach and Immediate Impacts Across Luzon
The heaviest rainfall is concentrated across the Ilocos Region, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Batanes, and Cagayan. In Central Luzon, provinces including Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, and Bulacan are experiencing intermittent to heavy rainfall, cloudy skies, and localized thunderstorms.
Metro Manila, alongside Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and Antique, is also seeing wet weather conditions.
Maritime Warnings and Outlook for the Days Ahead
Coastal communities are facing hazardous marine conditions due to the enhanced monsoon. PAGASA’s marine bulletins indicated moderate to strong winds sweeping across the northern and western sections of Luzon, generating wave heights between 1.5 and 3.4 meters.
