“The World Cup is a tournament for people to enjoy; Please don’t mix politics in this – turning world cup into platform of political statements is not right for football Qatar boss says

Doha: The Qatar World Cup is a sports tournament for people from different parts of the world to enjoy and it is not right to mix politics in it, said Qatar World Cup CEO Nasser Al Khatar. In an interview given to Sky News, the CEO of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy responded in strong language against the criticisms made by some football associations regarding the preparations for the World Cup. He also responded that bringing politics into a tournament like the World Cup is not good for sports.

There are many people who talk about labor laws and welfare of workers. But they don’t have the expertise to talk about this area. He said that they are talking about things that they do not have a proper understanding of. European countries, including England and Denmark, have accused Qatar of failing to respect the rights of migrant workers during the construction of the stadiums prepared in Qatar for the football World Cup. He said this in response to a question related to this.

Football associations in European countries, which have come forward with the campaign for workers’ compensation, do not have a clear understanding of what is really going on in Qatar. In a recent YouGov survey conducted by Amnesty International on workers’ compensation, football fans, including those in European countries, responded positively to FIFA’s compensation package. He also pointed out that only 10 percent of those who participated in the survey conducted in 15 countries, including 10 European countries, opposed the package. So let’s leave such matters to the experts. He said that the European football associations should pay more attention to their teams.

Over the past 10 years, Qatar has introduced radical reforms in the field of employment. He added that Qatar’s move to announce a minimum wage without discrimination among workers has been praised by the world nations. Last year, Qatar also set up a system to complain against those who violate labor laws. There is also a provision that payment should be made to the employee’s bank account within one week of the due date. He stated that 96 percent of the companies have followed this correctly.

Qatar has not banned the raising of rainbow flags by LGBT groups among football fans. But he said that it is up to FIFA to decide whether England captain and others should be allowed to wear the One Love band. Meanwhile, there are no plans to make any amendments to Qatar’s LGBT-related laws. At the same time, he assured that anyone arriving in Qatar will not face any form of discrimination. We only ask that those coming to Qatar respect the country’s culture. He said that as long as one does not cause trouble to others and does not destroy the common crocodiles, one has nothing to fear.

At the same time, to the question of whether there is an element of racism in the criticisms against Qatar, his response was that it is impossible to look into what is inside the minds of others. At the same time, there is no doubt that Qatar is being unfairly attacked. Criticisms against the country have started since Qatar won the right to host the World Cup 12 years ago. But he stated that Qatar has always tried to see them as challenges and rise to them.
