Led by the outstanding ski jumping queen Katharina Althaus, the German team had a furious weekend at the Nordic World Championships in Planica and easily topped the record at the home World Championships in Oberstdorf 2021 at halftime. Within 29 hours, the DSV athletes won six medals: four in ski jumping and two in Nordic combined. Gold in the women’s team and in mixed – in each case with Althaus, who has already won the individual competition on the normal hill – was particularly impressive. Even before the second week of the World Cup, all expectations have been met for the Germans.
In addition to the meanwhile three-time world champion Katharina Althaus, Andreas Wellinger and Karl Geiger also contributed to the strong result, who got in shape just in time and won silver and bronze in the individual World Championships. For Althaus there are even four titles in Planica – that has never happened before in ski jumping. However, she did not set that as a specific goal, said Althaus. “I already said after the first gold medal that everything that comes now is an extra. And that’s how it is now.” In any case, before the women’s large hill competition on Wednesday, there was a hearty celebration in the DSV team. “The boys’ coaches had guitars and drums with them. There was a good atmosphere,” said the 26-year-old from Oberstdorf.
