[周刊王CTWANT] Nepal is located in a mountainous area, and air disasters are frequent. Since 2000, there have been 18 air accidents in total. The latest incident occurred at 1:00 pm yesterday (15th) (nearly 11:00 am local time). Yeti airlines (Yeti airlines) No. 9N-ANC passenger plane took off from the capital Kathmandu (Kathmandu) on the ) near the crash. 68 of the 72 people on board were killed, making it the deadliest air disaster in Nepal in 30 years. It is worth noting that the same type of aircraft has crashed many times, such as the TransAsia Flight 235 crash that shocked Taiwan on February 4, 2015. At that time, after taking off, the passenger plane lost control and hit the viaduct and fell into the Keelung River, killing 40 passengers and missing 3 people.

According to the Nepal Civil Aviation Authority, the 9N-ANC passenger plane once communicated with the control tower from the crash site Seti Gorge, “and then it crashed.” Pokhara Airport spokesman Joshi (Anup Joshi) pointed out that the plane was in Pokhara. The valley between the new and old airports fell for unknown reasons. At that time, “the cruise altitude was 12,500 feet (about 3,810 meters), and it was in a normal descent stage.” Immediately after the plane hit the ground, it burst into flames and exploded, wreckage scattered and thick smoke billowed frequently.

The crashed plane was 15 years old, and there were 72 people on board, including 2 infants, 4 crew members and 15 foreigners, including 5 Indians, 4 Russians, 2 Koreans, French and Irish. Nationality, Argentinian nationality, and Australian nationality each have one person.

Local television footage showed that hundreds of search and rescue personnel continued to search the hills at the crash site. A police official said the plane crashed between two mountains, making it difficult for search and rescue personnel to reach. A local resident interviewed described: “Half of it is on the hillside, and the other half is in the Seti river at the bottom of the valley.”

The Nepalese government subsequently issued a statement that Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal had called an emergency cabinet meeting after learning of the crash. Nepal’s Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel told the media that the government has set up a task force to investigate the cause of the accident and expects to submit a report within 45 days.

The plane that crashed was the widely used ATR72 twin turboprop airliner, manufactured by a joint venture between Airbus and Italy’s Leonardo. Experts believe that the ATR72 engine has insufficient driving force and is an aircraft model to be eliminated. The air crashes of TransAsia Airlines in the past ten years or so have involved ATR-72 aircraft many times.

The last air disaster in Nepal with heavy casualties was in 1992, when an Airbus A300 passenger plane of Pakistan International Airlines crashed into a nearby hill while approaching Kathmandu, killing all 167 people on board. Before the incident on the 15th, a total of 17 air crashes had occurred in Nepal since 2000, killing 273 people. The European Union banned Nepalese aviation operators from entering the European Union’s airspace on the grounds of safety in 2013.

The ATR72 model is also used by Taiwanese airlines for domestic routes. On February 4, 2015, an ATR72-600 aircraft of TransAsia Airlines flew from Taipei to Kinmen, GE235 flight number B-22816, shortly after taking off from Taipei Songshan Airport. Lost control and crashed into the viaduct and fell into the Keelung River. Some people’s driving recorders just captured the horrifying moment. The crash killed 40 passengers and left three missing. The cause of the accident was reported by the Aviation Safety Committee according to the fact that the driver only discovered the wrong throttle 8 seconds before the plane crashed.
