Expensive GPS equipment was stolen three times in three days last week in the Central and West Jutland Police District. The police are currently investigating the cases and are now asking for the public’s help.
– We know from previous cases that these thefts come in waves, says head of the Mobile Theft Group (MTG), Police Commissioner Kresten Lund Breinhild in a press release.
In the three cases, GPS equipment has been stolen from agricultural machinery with an estimated total value of close to one and a half million kroner. The cases are from Thisted, Skive and Herning municipalities.
The Mobile Theft Group is a special unit at the Central and West Jutland Police that investigates cases involving traveling criminals.
– The experience we have from previous cases shows that there is a high degree of professionalism in this type of theft. It is custom work, they only go for one type of broom, and the way the thieves approach it is far from random, says Kresten Lund Breinhild.
Often citizen inquiries
The Central and West Jutland Police urges citizens who see strange cars or people behaving differently or suspiciously near machine stations or farms to contact the police with any observations.
– It is often inquiries from citizens who say that they have seen something abnormal or different that help us to get these investigations started. Even if you are not sure what you have seen or whether it has any significance, we encourage you to call 114 and tell us about it, says the police commissioner.
In previous similar cases, where it has been possible to arrest and later sentence the thieves, there have been groups of men from Eastern Europe who have taken up residence in a rental house for a short period, where they have targeted GPS equipment and then left the country.
– It can be in a holiday home or in a bed & breakfast with a private landlord or similar. We know from experience that the perpetrators often rent cars in other countries, and furthermore, many citizens from Eastern Europe come to Denmark for legal purposes, so the nationality of the number plate is not suspicious in itself.
At the same time, the police urge owners of expensive GPS equipment to take good care of it.
– It is at this time of year, when the GPS equipment has to go out on the fields again, we see these thefts in waves. The thieves do not hold back because the tractor is inside an unlocked warehouse or barn. It is important that you as an owner deal with the fact that you have some expensive and immediately marketable equipment sitting on your machines, says the police commissioner.
