As a student at Aalborg University, you gradually have to deal with a new trend alongside the notorious exam reading.
Several times it has happened that students have their exams canceled due to errors on the part of the university.
And now it’s crazy again.
On Wednesday, AAU again had to report the same boring message to a group of students:
– The exam set consisted of assignments from previous exam sets.
Even though the students had already received the assessment, they must therefore now take the same exam again.
This time it is the bachelor’s student in Medicine with Industrial Specialization who, after spending three weeks on an exam, must pay for other people’s mistakes.
Answers to the previous set of exams from 2021, which were repeated in the test, have been freely available to the students on the university’s internal learning platform, Moodle.
According to the dean of the health faculty, Lars Hvilsted Rasmussen, it is a regrettable situation that should not be possible:
– We are very sorry on behalf of our students. It is an unfair disadvantage for them.
But at the same time he adds that the cancellation of the exam in question was a necessary choice:
– As an institution, we have made the choice that there must be no doubt about the quality of our educations and thus the testing of our educations.
Control system failed
Previously, these were exams for Law and Medical Market Access, respectively, where students were forced to take an already completed test again.
Due to Aalborg University’s history with canceled exams, there has therefore been a heightened effort to ensure that similar situations do not occur again:
– We always have two pairs of eyes. One who prepares the exam papers and one to check that it is in order. And in this case, the control system has not worked because it has not been detected that there was a reuse of a previous exam, says dean Lars Hvilsted Rasmussen.
In light of the error, the University has therefore offered the affected students the choice of when they wish to write a new assignment:
On Monday 4 March, five days after they got the message about the canceled exam, or for an extraordinary re-examination in June.
– It is not a matter that has good solutions. It is about finding the least bad solutions. So we take the blame for an error. We apologize to the students.
Now the study board and the study management will initiate a dialogue to ensure that the error does not repeat itself. However, Lars Hvilsted Rasmussen cannot yet put into words what a concrete proposal for a solution is.
