BOSTON (AP) — Sports executives including New England Patriots owner Jonathan Kraft met with Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey and other officials Thursday to celebrate the state’s inclusion as a major player in the Soccer World Cup 2026 and contribute to the dissemination of the local Boston Soccer 2026 brand.

Gillette Stadium in Foxborough is one of 16 venues in the United States, Mexico and Canada where matches of the international competition will take place in the three North American countries.

Tournament supporters say the matches could bring in hundreds of millions of dollars to the region and attract more than 400,000 tourists. 1994 was the last time the greater Boston metropolitan area participated in a World Cup.

“This is super, super exciting,” Healy said. “We are going to make the most of this opportunity.”

Kraft owns Gillette Stadium through its Kraft Sports Group. The Kraft family also owns the New England club Revolution in MLS.

Kraft said Gillette will need to host at least six games. He also noted that the World Cup will put Boston on the world stage and bring fans from all over the world.

Each of the 16 US cities that will host matches has its own brand and logo.

The Boston logo and brand incorporates some familiar elements of the city, such as the cobblestones used in early Boston streets and the Zakim Bridge, as well as a green, blue, and orange color palette.
