Many fans were disappointed with the director’s work.
The comedy “The Diamond Arm” has long been recognized as one of the most striking films of the Soviet period. The public still does not lose interest in the film, but the first viewers, as it turned out, were not delighted with the work of Leonid Gaidai.
According to the director himself, after the first showings of the film he was faced with many devastating letters. Both he personally and the film studio received dissatisfied messages from fans who were disappointed with The Diamond Arm. In their opinion, the comedy discredited the honor of the Soviet citizen, the film itself looked like a series of unrelated comic episodes, and the actors were not suitable for their roles.
“Our party does a lot in the ideological education of Soviet people. But the filmmakers are not shy about using a “cunning joke” to negate all this,” – wrote dissatisfied viewers.
But Gaidai chose not to react to the criticism and released the film without changes. And over time, the mass audience changed its attitude, recognizing “The Diamond Arm” as one of the director’s best films.
