this had a special meaning

At the dawn of its existence, domestic television was completely different. There were only six channels, the picture was black and white, the TV presenters were called announcers, and rather unusual means were used as makeup.

Thus, the legendary announcer of the USSR Anna Shatilova, who hosted the famous programs “Time”, “News” and “Blue Light” for many years, recalled that in that era all female presenters always used green lipstick and green blush.

Now this may seem strange – they say, why apply exactly this color to your face, and even in the times of black and white television?! However, this action had a practical meaning. And it was explained by the peculiarities of the cameras of that time.

“In the era of black-and-white television, cameras used red filters that literally ate up all the red. Therefore, television announcers wore green lipstick and used green blush. Since on air the green color looked natural and expressive,” said makeup artist Elvira Kashapova during the lecture “Transformation of television: from monochrome to color.”

They say that USSR television picked up this idea from its overseas colleagues. In the USA, a special makeup technique for TV/cinema pictures was developed back in the 20s and 30s by the legendary founder of the company of the same name, Max Factor, who, by the way, came from the Russian Empire (Before leaving overseas, he worked in St. Petersburg and Ryazan).

Factor created a special makeup (including green shades) for panchromatic film, which was used by 96% of Hollywood film studios – it was very thin, did not crack and looked natural in the frame. Maximilian also came up with mattifying pressed powder Pan-Cake: it met the technical requirements of color cinema and corrected the complexion of actors.

Of course, they did not use capitalist cosmetics in the USSR, but they adopted the green method. As a result, newscasters in the country wore green lipstick and blush until the transition to color in the late 1970s, until the need for cosmetics of this color disappeared.
