This famous MMO offers a new feature that has never been seen in a game of the genre! Perhaps it will be repeated elsewhere?

EVE Online is an Icelandic space flight simulator MMORPG taking place on a single server! Within it, players can have access to 7800 planetary systems. The game is renowned for the depth of its economic system and for its interactions between players, essential to the proper functioning of the universe. Industry is at the heart of the gameplay and players can decide to ally or compete to control certain areas for the exploitation of their resources. This then leads to gigantic space battles between hundreds of players. The originality of these interactions makes it a rather innovative software and it doesn’t stop there for the surprising ideas. A PC Gamer journalist recounts his meeting with Snorri Árnason, the game’s director, and the new features they discussed.

Typically the identity of the game is these big battles (…) How can we put the players at the heart of this action? (…) Watching the post-match replay! The debates about what went right, but also how this team made this mistake… I would love to watch that kind of thing.

Árnason spoke about his passion for football and wants to use concepts from the sport for his space MMORPG. He especially thinks of the post-match replays which debate the progress and the different actions. For him, this would be perfect for a game where players are in teams and lots of different actions are possible. He imagines a system where, via an API, everyone could download the battle 24 hours later. All in full resolution with the possibility of moving in a floating camera or even from the point of view of any player. The applications of such a functionality could be multiple.

Firstly, it would allow many YouTubers who reenact certain battles to do so more easily and better thanks to this tool. Thus, the game will gain visibility and perhaps gain new players, a good point for the community and the studio. Also, such replays could make it possible to better analyze the different errors, but also to better understand the progress of a battle for beginners. This would make the game more accessible and therefore potentially gain more registrants too. Such a feature could also be imagined on more traditional MMORPGs like Guild Wars 2, World of Warcraft or The Elder Scrolls Online: Necrom where large PvP battles are rather common.
