This new scam could cost you dearly

Fraudsters posing as a cloud service are offering 50 GB of storage. Be careful not to get caught!

If we are getting used to emails inviting us to click on a link to check for a blocked delivery at Bpost or renew our Netflix subscription, hackers today tend to renew their processes.

This week, several readers alerted our attention to a new type of scam. Hackers impersonated a cloud storage service. In their email, they indicate that the user has reached their storage limit. Do not panic, however, the loyalty program offers you 50 GB of storage and more, a nice little bonus appearance. Except that in practice, it is not.

By clicking on the email, the user risks unknowingly installing a virus on his smartphone or computer. The damage is then done.

If informed Internet users will quickly notice that this is a fake, the not so urgent approach of this email has apparently surprised some Internet users. One of our readers told us “almost got had”.

The use of an @gmail.com mailbox, the use of English in the email, the absence of legal information and the link, which does not point directly to an https website, should nevertheless alert most Internet users on the dangerousness of this email.

As the Computer Crime Unit recalls, “simply clicking on the link or opening the attachment can download a virus to your computer“. It is therefore advisable to be extremely careful with this type of mail.

If the damage is done, you can always try to run a scan of your computer with an antivirus, or even reinstall the operating system to clean up.
