This old Alfa Romeo van will go on sale at a price rarely seen for a utility. Its history explains its value.

This Alfa Romeo model is a van from the 1970s. It is part of a list of vehicles offered for sale by Gooding & Company at Pebble Beach (in California), on August 18 and 19. Admittedly, the value of vans is rarely sufficient for potential buyers to snap them up at auction.

Nevertheless, this Alfa Romeo is not just any van. This is a 1973 F12 Van, a model whose attraction for some collectors has already been observed in the past. Last May, an example of an F12 dating from 1961 also went up for auction. Although it was sold for less than its estimate, it still left for more than 43,000 euros.

An Alfa Romeo van restored after being used for Italian motorcycle championships

This F12 is more specifically part of the ligne Car income from Alfa Romeo. It includes all-purpose vans that made their debut in 1967. The example on sale is slightly newer, dating from 1973. In its early life as a van, it served as a support vehicle for a motorcycle team, Moto Villa.

The latter team had by the way dominated the 250cc motocross class in the 1970s and had been Italian champion in 1975, 1976 and 1977. Once rendered useless for the team, the van was stored until 2016 when it was purchased by Ed Seymour, a noted Alfa Romeo car restorer. He then made it undergo a complete restoration.

A van whose value could exceed 100,000 euros

Today this Alfa Romeo van is decorated with a beautiful red and white hue. It actually sports an Autodelta livery. It refers to the legendary racing department of Alfa Romeo. Created in 1961, it is the source of some of the brand’s most legendary vehicles. This is for example the case of la T33/3.

The F12 Furgone is powered by a four-cylinder engine. It only produces 52 horsepower. For the time, this power was however not ridiculous for a utility. It will be sold at the Gooding & Company auction at Pebble Beach in August. Estimates suggest a price between $100,000 and $130,000. In euros, the price could thus fluctuate between 91,000 euros and 118,000 euros.
