Last night’s PlayStation Showcase was full of various game announcements. We were treated to blockbusters of course, but also to independent and deliberately poetic titles. Like Sword of the Sea.

Patience is a sea of virtues

Between the explosive gameplay sequence of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the resounding announcement of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater (the remake of MGS 3) or even Capcom’s big action-RPG, Dragon’s Dogma 2, the spotlight was made at AAA productions, yes, but not only. We were also treated to the reveal of many independent games like Sword of the Sea, a title that deserves your full attention.

Ocean and desert as far as the eye can see, shiny textures, mystical character and surfing on a sword (why not, after all) accompanied by captivating music: the trip promises to be ultra-exotic and eye-catching. Above all, it is unmistakably reminiscent of Journeycult title from thatgamecompagny first released on PS3 in 2012. And it’s not for nothing.

A Frank Ocean soundtrack?

If Sword of the Sea looks like Journey 2, it’s because its development is led by Giant Squid, the talented studio behind the atmospheric Abzû (which was already exploring the seabed) and The Pathless. Two critically acclaimed games, precisely piloted by the former artistic director of thatgamecompagny, to whom we owe Journey (as well as flOw and Flower). Everything is therefore explained.

If you want a little context, Matt Nava (head of the project) has rightly expressed himself on the PlayStation Blog. In Sword of the Sea, we play as a Wraith, a character brought back to life whose mission will be to restore the world to its former glory, taking it from the desert to the sea.

For that, it will be equipped with a Hoversword, a kind of mix between a snowboard, a skateboard and a hoverboard. We can slide on sand and water, do tricks and explore the necropolis of the Gods to find ancient ruins… not to mention the Leviathans, creatures from which we will have to escape.

A frankly seductive program whose release date has not yet been revealed: on the other hand, we know that the game is planned on PlayStation 5 and on PC, via Steam.
