This smartphone brand is definitely throwing in the towel

The Meizu brand was historically known in the smartphone market for its very original products, out of the ordinary. It has not been able to compete with Xiaomi and Huawei. Now, it announces the end of its smartphone activity.

Do you know Meizu? This Chinese smartphone brand has offered some references in France, but has never managed to achieve the popularity of Xiaomi, Huawei or even OnePlus.

It’s not for lack of having attempted brilliant coups over the years. We remember the Meizu Zero, the smartphone without holes or buttons, or the Meizu Pro 7, the smartphone with a screen on the back. Even more different? Forget Android and look at the Meizu Pro 5 equipped with… Ubuntu Mobile, the system based on GNU/Linux. Finally, Meizu is one of the rare manufacturers to equip itself with Samsung Exynos chips rather than Qualcomm Snapdragon on some of its smartphones.

Now Meizu’s story in the smartphone market is closing. The brand announces the cessation of this activity to better focus on AI.

Preparing for after smartphone

It’s certain its official website in Chinese that Meizu announces this major change in strategy. The brand wants to go “All In” in AI and for that it will put an end to its traditional smartphone projects. As noted 9To5GoogleMeizu’s interface, FlymeOS, should evolve to adapt to new types of devices and offer more functions related to AI.

What is the future of Meizu? This is still quite vague. Notably because if several brands have announced products dedicated to AI such as the Humane AI Pin or the Rabbit R1, mentioned by the boss of Meizu in his announcement, it remains to be proven that the public wants devices dedicated to this technology .

The Meizu 20 should therefore be the brand’s latest smartphone. In the meantime, the telephone market is still losing a bit of originality.
