After FC Bayern Munich lost 3-1 at 1. FSV Mainz 05, Thomas Müller was also criticized by his coach Thomas Tuchel.

Munich – Thomas Müller is no longer set at Bayern Munich. In the two important quarter-finals against Manchester City, in which Munich drew the short straw, the Weilheimer was on the bench, and he hardly managed anything when he returned to the starting XI in Mainz. Even coach Thomas Tuchel spoke publicly about the performance of the 33-year-old and was not sparing in his criticism of the world champion.

At FC Bayern since: July 2000

Tuchel clearly criticizes Müller after Bayern’s bankruptcy: “Today is not his day”

Bayern lost 3-1 on Saturday in Mainz after a poor performance, only a little later BVB pushed the series champions off the top of the table. Five games before the end of the season, the pressure on Munich is enormous, head coach Tuchel was at a loss in an interview after the game. When asked about his offensive player Thomas Müller, he answered relentlessly honestly.

Across from Sky, Tuchel spoke of “incredibly good situations” in which the Upper Bavarian was put in Mainz on Saturday. However, “today wasn’t his day,” admitted the 49-year-old. “He usually makes two or three assists from the positions we found him in today. But it shouldn’t be today,” said Tuchel, explaining the pale appearance of the 121-time national player.

Tuchel criticizes effectiveness – even Müller with self-critical statements

According to his coach, Müller “made a lot of mistakes”. Two potentially crucial scenes in particular were remembered by Tuchel. “During the phase in the second half when we were really good, he shot twice, where at least once Joao (Cancelo, Anm. d. Red) is completely free to make it 2-0 and end the game,” the Krumbacher criticized Müller’s stubbornness. “The effectiveness to decide the matter for us” was missing.

Müller himself also described the bankruptcy in the Rhineland-Palatinate capital as a “brutal disappointment” and that Bayern’s game was “very flawed”. “Even for me personally, I made a lot of mistakes, was very unclean with the ball,” he criticized his own performance. “Once I could have taken Joao on the left, where I decided to take a shot – and suddenly it’s 3-1,” he said, describing the missed chance to make it 2-0.

Thomas Müller after losing the championship lead: “We’re knocked out”

Müller, who was substituted after 75 minutes, found it difficult to find the right words after the fourth competitive game without a win. “I’m not relaxed at all, I’m just a little at a loss as to how this situation came about,” the home-grown child continued. He had “no explanation” for the drop in performance after Bayern’s 1-0 lead and summed it up: “We’re knocked out”.

The self-criticism is great, now the record champions still have five games in which you can’t afford to slip up. Borussia Dortmund is currently one point ahead of Bayern and could win the championship on its own. However, should FCB be as passive in the coming games as they were in the second half in Mainz, the “catastrophe” – as Oliver Kahn described a possible season without a title – could become a reality.
