Three dead in fire in nursing home

Three people died in a fire in a retirement home near Oldenburg (Lower Saxony). They probably died from smoke fumes. Two people succumbed to their injuries on the spot, and a third died on the way to the hospital, according to the fire department.

Another six residents suffered serious or life-threatening injuries. The remaining 28 residents were rescued from their rooms.

“The home was full,” said fire department spokesman Max Eilers. The residents are many bedridden people and patients in wheelchairs, which made the evacuation difficult.

The fire was noticed because the fire alarms in the old people’s and nursing home sounded the alarm at 7.40 p.m. and the fire brigade was alerted directly. Firefighters quickly got the fire under control.

What exactly caused the deadly fire is still unclear. According to initial findings, the fire broke out in a patient’s room.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals by ambulance. The other residents of the retirement home in Wardenburg were first checked medically by the rescue workers in a neighboring building of the retirement home in a dining room. For the night, the seniors were accommodated in other accommodations.

There was special praise for the residents of the retirement home: “The neighbors had a lot of civil courage, they helped the nurses with the evacuation, that worked out well,” says Eilers.

The fire was not the only bad accident on Sunday in Lower Saxony: a balcony railing on a residential building broke and five men fell. Two people are in mortal danger, three others are seriously injured.
